St Leonards Beach
Nude Beach in Devonport-Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand
Sandy beach below the cliffs between Devonport and Takapuna on Auckland's North Shore, one of the city's best-known skinny-dipping beaches. After complaints, police brokered an agreement in 2003: stay more than 50 m from the access steps and do not lie within 30 m in front of clothed people walking past. Keeping to it lets naturists keep using the beach. New Zealand has no official nude beaches: the law targets obscene exposure and offensive behaviour, and courts have held that simple nudity on a beach where it is known to occur is not offensive. Be discreet and considerate.
