Sandfly Bay

Nude Beach in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand

Wild sandy bay below huge dunes on the Otago Peninsula, a Department of Conservation wildlife reserve occasionally used for nude sunbathing. About 20 minutes' walk down from the car park and 40 back up. Sea lions bask on the sand (stay at least 10 to 15 m away) and yellow-eyed penguins come ashore in the evening: crouch down out of sight and do not block their path to the sea. New Zealand has no official nude beaches: the law targets obscene exposure and offensive behaviour, and courts have held that simple nudity on a beach where it is known to occur is not offensive. Be discreet and considerate.
