Gunnison Beach
Nude Beach in Sandy Hook, New Jersey, United States
The largest clothing-optional beach on the US East Coast, on the ocean side of Sandy Hook in the Gateway National Recreation Area, with views across to Brooklyn and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Nude use began in the late 1970s. The National Park Service does not formally designate it, but it does not prohibit clothing-optional use on part of Beach Area G (South Gunnison) and posts signs; because the beach is federal land, it is the only place in New Jersey where nude bathing is legal. Wide soft sand and a relaxed, mixed crowd. Alcohol is not allowed and rangers patrol. Restrooms and showers in season; part of the beach is fenced off for nesting piping plovers in summer.
