Waitata Bay (Donkey Bay)

Small bay in the Bay of Islands about 2 km from Russell, next to Long Beach, reached by a 100 m signposted track from above the toilets at the Russell end of Long Beach. The naturist owner of the land put the beach area into a QEII National Trust covenant, and the covenant notice states that Waitata Bay is a naturist beach. New Zealand has no official nude beaches: the law targets obscene exposure and offensive behaviour, and courts have held that simple nudity on a beach where it is known to occur is not offensive. Be discreet and considerate.
